Monolite

Monolite is an interactive exhibit designed by Interactive Media Management students at George Brown College to engage multiple people using tangibility, light, and visual entertainment. The students were challenged to create an interactive exhibit showcasing one of the many surfaces created by Cosentino, selecting Dekton in the color Kovik. With this interactive exhibit, the user is faced with a series of buttons that trigger unique content depending on the combination of buttons pressed. Each of the 12 high-definition videos has been curated by the students to be unique, visually appealing and engaging.

Tasks

  • To build an aesthetically pleasing interactive exhibit at ADFF and Design TO to showcase its products, as well as to increase general awareness of Cosentino and its products.

  • The installation should invite the audience to engage with it and build networks.

  • Apply knowledge in UI UX design, coding, mechanics and animations in design and build the physical installation.

Process

Our class was assigned in three groups of 4 students, and each of the groups should provide two conceptual ideas for the exhibit. After our initial ideation, we had 100 post-it notes exercise, which guided us from ideation to the concept.

Our ideation was to have the exhibit that aligns with the brand values of Cosentino which was minimalism and luxury. We also wanted users to have tactile feedback with an element of surprise.

The user chooses any logos out of Cosentino, ADFF and George Brown to choose the theme of the videos they preferred. After that, they need to press a button from each side of the bar simultaneously to make a video of their chosen category play. And to guide them through this process, led light would also be part of this process.

We tried to make the project match the value of the target audience: Looking for inspiration, aesthetically driven, creative, innovative, knowledge, community, simplicity.

Our client was inspired by our idea during the presentation, so she decided to build our design for the ADFF and Design TO.

Production

The class was divided into four teams: Design Team, Tech & Build Team, Content Team, and the Project Management Team to carter the  process of production, I was chosen to be a part of Tech & Build Team

For the tech part of the task was for connecting buttons to videos and connecting led with buttons with raspberry pi, however, having troubleshooting issues with raspberry pi we moved to Arduino.

The major challenge that we faced was the lack of knowledge to work with Audrino and Python and the alterations in the measurement of the structure.

But thanks to experts in the tech check-in, we were able to figure out the technology and the built of the process.

Cosentino will showcase the Monolite, at its head office where it will serve the purpose to showcase different products the company has to offer. It will also be showcased at Design To, as an official entry of the school and ADFF.

My Learnings

Always have back-up plans in the real world, having teamwork & co-ordination can achieve wonders. I also learned about Aurdino and how it works.
